Romance1 storyThe oldest engine there is. Someone wants someone, something is in the way, and the story is what it costs to close the gap. Everything here is written by adults about adults.
dark-romancenothing yetRomance with the safety rails off: obsession, captivity, revenge, and love that is not good for anybody. Fiction, and labelled as such. Read the warnings before you start.
fantasynothing yetCourts and curses and long roads, with the parts most fantasy leaves out. Magic changes what bodies can do to each other, and these writers are interested in that.
science-fictionnothing yetShips, stations, augmented bodies and first contact that goes somewhere the mission briefing did not cover. Speculation is the excuse; the interest is what people still want.
Paranormalnothing yetVampires who have had centuries to get good at it, ghosts with unfinished business, and the living people foolish enough to answer. Older than the internet and not going anywhere.
historicalnothing yetThe past, where everything took longer and one glove could carry a whole conversation. Constraint is the point: the more the era forbids, the further a look can travel.
contemporarynothing yetNo magic, no manor house. Phones that ring at the wrong time, rent that is due, and two people working out what they are to each other in the middle of an ordinary year.
mystery-thrillernothing yetPlot with teeth. A body, a secret, a tail on the way home, and attraction that arrives at the least convenient possible moment. Tension is tension whichever kind is on the page.
slow-burnnothing yetStories that make you wait, on purpose. Every near miss is deliberate, and the payoff is measured against how long it took to arrive. The most demanding thing on this list to write well.
enemies-to-loversnothing yetTwo people who cannot stand each other, until the reason they cannot stand each other turns out to be the reason they cannot leave. Loud, argumentative, and reliably popular.
friends-to-loversnothing yetYears of history, one conversation that goes further than usual, and everything to lose. The risk here is not rejection. It is that you cannot go back to what you had.
second-chancenothing yetThey come back. Older, and carrying whatever went wrong the first time. These stories are about whether people actually change, and what it is worth if they have.
office-romancenothing yetClose quarters, bad hours, and a reporting line nobody wants to talk about. The workplace supplies the obstacle for free, which is why the setting refuses to go out of style.
power-exchangenothing yetControl given rather than taken, and the trust that has to exist first. The good stories in this genre are about negotiation as much as anything that follows it.
menage-polynothing yetThree people, or more, and the arithmetic of wanting that many at once. Jealousy is a character in most of these, and the best of them take it seriously.
lgbtqnothing yetQueer characters at the centre of their own stories rather than decorating someone else's. Every other genre on this list is in here too, told by people it belongs to.
monster-romancenothing yetPartners with too many limbs, the wrong number of eyes, or teeth that were never meant for this. Absurd on paper and completely sincere on the page, which is why it works.
humornothing yetErotica that knows it is ridiculous and commits anyway. Farce, parody, and things going wrong at the worst moment. Much harder to land than the serious kind.
angstnothing yetGrief, distance, and the long stretch where it looks like nobody gets what they want. Whether it ends well is up to the writer, and they are under no obligation.
